Nitocris Interview
Interview with Sara from Nitocris
By Lia
Onstage, Nitocris is an utterly captivating experience, and although they’re undeniably the sexiest Sydney women I’ve come across; their expertise far exceed their collective spunk. Playing to a predominantly male tongue-poking crude-talking crowd hasn’t got them down in the slightest, and I’d say guys are more intimidated by them than anything. I caught up with bass player, Sara (centre) in the toilets at the Metro Nightclub, Melbourne.
Have you ever been interviewed in a toilet?
No. I’ve actually never been interviewed while sitting on a toilet either, so this is even extra special.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen, or done in a public toilet?
I’ve seen some seedy shit in gay bars! What’s the weirdest thing I’ve done in a toilet… a big poo. I’ve pooed, I’ve pissed, I’ve smoked, I’ve had a big chat. Barfed my guts up, if you wanna call that weird. Everything you utilise a toilet for.
Given the option, half-flush or full-flush?
Well, if you’re doing number two, it’s a full-flush. If you do a number one, it’s just a half-flush. I’m environmentally aware. I don’t wanna waste water
What’s the funniest toilet wall graffiti you’ve ever read?
Once this girl wrote Nitocris, and underneath another girl wrote ‘are a bunch of sluts’. I thought that was really funny!
Has the new cd been released only in Australia?
So far, yeah. I mean, people have been ordering it from overseas, but that’s through Australia. It’s not actually distributed overseas.
Any plans to tour overseas?
Yeah, America next year hopefully
Is a move to Melbourne a viable option for the future? Or will you always be Sydney-siders?
For certain members, definitely. I’d like to move down here at some stage, and I know our singer does. I mean, we do love it down here, and we do spend a lot of time in Melbourne. Our drummer spends a lot of time here cos her boyfriend lives here. Hopefully it’ll get to a point where we don’t really live anywhere in particular…nomads, yeah!
(Editors note: any Nitocris member is more than welcome to move in with me (Lia) completely rent-free, in exchange for musical slavery)
Is there or has there been anything in the works side-project wise?
I’m starting a band with Monique from Insurge. We’re tryna get together a dance sort of number. Yeah, all of us do write our own thing outside of the band, and do things with other bands and stuff.
To what do you accredit your being together so long?
No one else’d put up with us! I dunno, just cos we’re really good friends, and we’ve stuck by each other. We’ve been through all the worst, and the best, so that’s what makes us stay together.
What’s your favourite song to play from the new album?
I Love playing Headspace and Angel’s Name. They’re really moody songs, and they’re also really heavy. They just create a vibe that’s very different to what we’ve ever played. I also enjoy playing Level Headed just stuff that’s different to what we’ve done. Not cos it’s better, but just cos it’s different.
You guys often get musicians up onstage with you? Who would you most like to play with, alive or dead?
I dunno… I’d love Siouxsie Sioux, from Siouxsie & the Banshees. Patti Smith. Jeff Buckley - I would’ve loved to have done an acoustic song, just to hear his voice, and just to be in the presence, be a part of the beautiful voice he had.
[ For those of you living under rock, Nitocris broke up recently after over ten rockin' years together. This interview was conducted before the break-up. Pretty Ugly salutes these fine Aussie Rock Women. Thanks for the music!! ]
